More than 90% of the world's ships are built in Asian shipyards. JSTRA is engaged in activities to promote tie-ups of shipbuilders among Asian countries that are essential to address the technical regulations on ships developed by IMO and such like.

To properly address the recent reinforcement of international regulations, it is important for shipbuilding industries throughout the entire Asian region to understand the latest trends of the international regulations and standards related to shipbuilding at an early stage and to nurture shared awareness through exchange of opinion and such. Further, it is imperative to communicate opinions internationally and in a cooperative manner as outputs of ASEF's activities.
In order to achieve this, the Asian Shipbuilding Experts' Forum (ASEF) was founded under the initiative of Japan.
ASEF is currently exploring the establishment of NGO with IMO-Consultative status.
